When you are packing up your belongings in preparation for a move, you probably are going to discover that you have a lot more stuff than you thought. Sorting through everything can take a lot of time and it’s easy to become sidetracked when you stumble upon items that have special memories.
Easy Moving Inventory Tips
Here’s an easy way to simplify the process so you can manage your home inventory before the movers arrive during every step of the way:
- Create a Master List — In a notebook or on your tablet or smartphone, create a spreadsheet with one column for every room in your house. This will serve as the master list and will make organizing your inventory easier.
- Simplify — It’s not always easy to let go, but the fewer items you have the easier your move will be. Donate old clothes and other items you haven’t used in a while to charity or hold a yard sale to earn some extra cash for your move.
- Track Everything — Any item that goes into a box should be recorded on your master list. On the outside of each box, mark which room it came from and add the items to the corresponding column.
- Save Your Home Inventory List — Once your packing list is complete, save it to a shared server such as the Cloud or Dropbox where it can be accessed by you and other family members from anywhere. This will make it easier to double-check to make sure everything arrived safely once you arrive at your new home.
Hold on to Your List
After your move, it’s a good idea to keep your home inventory updated. That way you will always have a record of what you have. This can be helpful if you every have to file a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance claim.
