Things to Do on the First Day after You Move

Moving is an adjustment for everybody in your family. You, your spouse, your children, the family dog, everybody has been ripped out of their familiar comfort zone and inserted into a strange, new and somewhat scary environment.

So it’s important that you spend some time adjusting to your new surroundings. Obviously, you will need to unpack all your things and settle into your new home.

But even before you unpack every box delivered by your NYC movers and put your possession where they belong, there are some things you should do right away to make you and your family feel more at ease in your new home.

Explore the Neighborhood

Regardless of how busy your career is, it’s never a good idea to go to work right away after a move. Your mind and body need some time to adjust to your new surroundings.

Instead, take a few days just to relax and unwind. Take a tour of your new neighborhood. Find the nearest public park where your children can play or the discover the route you plan to take to walk your dog each day.

Locate the nearest public library and sign everybody up in your family for new cards. This will make them feel like a part of the community.

If you are religious, find your new church, temple or mosque and introduce yourself to some of the leaders.

Everyday Needs

Where is the nearest grocery store? Dry cleaners? Fast food restaurant? All of these things are important, especially as you are getting settled into your new home and have less time to make meals or do your own laundry.

Take care of your immediate requirements, such as locating the nearest hospital and finding a new doctor and dentist if you are moving to a new city or state.

Finally, introduce yourself to your new neighbors. Be friendly and outgoing. If possible, offer a gift of friendship, such as home-baked goods.
